Preview: Gerber Knives Adds New Tech To Old Stylings

by Chris     October 21, 2010

If you ask me what the best art, architecture, design movement is, I would say it is the Art Deco movement. I just love the combination of clean flowing lines mixed with hard geometric shapes. Gerber must also like the Art Deco style, because they have incorporated it into their Gerber FIT multi-knife.

The Gerber FIT mimics the classic look of an art deco locomotive with its front facing head light and aerodynamic body, but in the case of the knife, it uses a bright 25-lumen LED powered by a AAA battery. The knife is pretty minimal in features and is likely meant as an everyday carry. It does have a total of 10 tools on board, but as with all pocket knives they count every little thing as a tool. For example, the photo above shows at least 5 tools: a bottle opener, the LED light, a two ended screw driver (two tools), and a hex nut driver. Also listed is a two-edged blade, tweezers, and scissors.

The knife isn't set to be released until February of 2011, so you have a few months to save up for the $50 price tag.

Thanks to Nate for the tip.

Kett Vacuum Saw Keeps The Lead Out

by Chris     October 20, 2010

If you are in the business of doing house remodels you are probably aware of the EPA lead ruling and how it affects just about every aspect of your job. The EPA ruling requires all "paid" renovators who work on homes and childcare facilities built prior to 1978 to be EPA certified and follow proper safety protocol to prevent lead contamination and poisoning. Basically this requires all lead dust to be safely contained. If you fail to comply, you risk fines of up to $37,500 per day. Ouch.

The Kett KSV-432 Vacuum Saw, when used in conjunction with a HEPA certified vacuum, can remove up to 99.97 percent of lead particles, which should help to satisfy the EPA. The plunge saw features a cast aluminum head that attaches easily to most standard shop vacuums, and allows the tool to collect the dust at the source. Kett's KSV-431 plunge saw is ideal for making cutouts in everything from drywall, plywood, plastic, fiberglass, plumbing, and even ductwork. The saw is powered by a 5.0 amp variable speed motor that spins at 2,500 RPMs and uses replaceable saw blades.

Bosch SpeedX Concrete Bits Have The X Factor

by Chris     October 19, 2010
If two cutting surfaces are good, wouldn't four or even eight cutting surfaces be even better? Simple logic tells us the answers is yes. So when Bosch comes out with a new concrete bit that has more carbide teeth, we can only expect better cutting results. While most carbide concrete bits have a single strip of carbide that offers two cutting surfaces, the Bosch SpeedX bit has two strips of carbide that offer four cutting surfaces. The SpeedX also goes a step further and offers four side cutting surfaces as well.

Cutting the concrete is only half the battle though. All of those teeth do a good job, but there is still the issue of clearing the hole of dust and debris during the drilling process. With previous bits, clearing the hole often required users to plunge the drill up and down to help with the dust removal. This often added quite a bit to the drilling time. The SpeedX looks to have the answers to this problem; by utilizing a shortened head design and enlarged dust clearing channels, Bosch says the SpeedX performs better as the hole gets deeper.

All of these new features give the SpeedX a 20 percent faster drilling time, and a bit that is 18 percent more durable then any other concrete bit available. Time is money; so I am always happy to read about new products that take things to the next level and offer a quicker answers to our problems. Video after Read More.
