Blog Cabin 09 Voting Round Two: Floor Plan

Voting on the Blog Cabin location has just ended with the narrow victory going to the Meadow View. I am happy with the chosen end result, as it was also my choice.

This next round of voting is to determine the floor plan to be used. We have a choice between a Vaulted View Lodge, and an Endless View Lodge. You can see the two floor plans, and make your choice here. While only one is called Endless View, they both have rap-around patios that are sure to offer great views of the surrounding meadow. This time around the choice is a bit harder for me as some parts of the floor plans just don't make sense, but in the end I chose the Vaulted View.

Blog Cabin 2009 Voting Has Begun

For those of you that don't know what Blog Cabin is... have you been living in a cave? It is a TV show on the DIY network like no other. We the people get to decide on the design of the house, and at the end of the show they give it away to one lucky viewer.

This year things start out a little different; we get to choose the location. Both choices are located in The Preserve at Little Pine near Asheville, NC, but one location is a mountain view, and one is on a meadow. Both options are sure to be beautiful, but there can only be one winner. As I write this, Meadow view is up 62% to 38%, and it would be hard for mountain view to make a comeback. The voting started on the 12th and will last until February, so be sure to check back or use the RSS feed so you don't miss out on all the voting.

Bosch Quick Change Hole Saws

photo_bimetal_2Anyone that uses more then one hole saw throughout the day knows what a hassle it is to change to a different size. I use three sizes for my normal work, often switching between them a couple dozen times a day, and all that time adds up.

For every problem, there is often a solution, and the Bosch Quick Change System might be that solution. I have seen the Bosch Quick Change Hole Saw System in the hardware stores for a while now, but I never really gave them a good look. They act much like a quick release chuck for your drill, making things a lot simpler.

The best part is you can use this technology on your existing holes saw using an adapteralt, then when you need a replacement you can buy the new Quick Change Hole Saws.

Happy New Year

I hope everyone had a good time last night, but more importantly had a safe night and made it home OK. Now that the new year is here, there are a few things that you need to remember to take care of.

  1. First is to take down your Christmas lights. They are not 365 lights.
  2. Second is your taxes. You don't have to wait until April 15th to get you taxes done.
  3. Third is to add more reviews to Tool-Rank.
Thanks to everyone that added your reviews, and participated in the Bosch Impactor Giveaway. Here is to a new year, with hopefully more tools being made in the USA, and not less.

Weird Black & Decker Screwdriver Features

bd_li4000_2

Take a look at this innovative feature from B&D. The Lithium-Ion SmartDriver with Exclusive Magnetic Screw-Holderalt. Every time I see this photo I can't help but laugh. Not that this is a bad idea from B&D, but your standard magnetic bit tip holdersalt do the same thing, and have been around for years. Plus at only 3.6 volts, its not like this gun will be driving 3-inch deck screws.

I guess the average user would find this useful for light duty work, or crafts, but would also be using very short screws, so I fail to see the point.

Winter 2009 Woodworking Awards

lj_wa09It is almost that time of the year again. The 2009 Winter Woodworking Awards from LumberJocks.com are just around the corner. LumberJocks.com is an online woodworking community where users can share stories, photos, and videos about their own woodworking projects.

The woodworking awards are a chance for members of LumberJocks to compete against each other to win great prizes. All entries will then be judged by other members, and the person with the most points is the winner. This winter the two entry categories are A Knot Like No Other and A Secret Compartment. If you want to put your skills to the test, head on over to LumberJocks and enter.

No Love For Blade On Left Circular Saws

What is with the lack of selection when it comes to circular saws that are blade on left? It is actually very surprising to me that manufacturers do not make their circular saws in both versions. Do they not realize that some people are left handed, or are like me and just prefer to be able to cut with my right hand, and see the cut at the same time. Cordless saws are blade left, and so are worm drive saws. Why should people have to switch between both, and not have a choice?

Some manufacturers actually do make blade left saws, but usually the selection is very limited, and so are the features. Out of all the major manufacturers, if you are looking for a 7-1/4" blade left circular saw with an electric brake, you have only one choice, the Porter-Cable 424MAG. With Porter Cable being placed between Black & Decker and DeWalt, who knows how long this saw, or the quality of the saw will last. Props to Porter-Cable, at least for now. All the other Brands need to get their act togerher.
