Sexy Planes From Lee Valley

Lee Valley NX60 Premium Block Plane

I dont know anything when it comes to block planes, or any plane for that matter, but I do know when something looks cool. This is one cool looking plane. I almost want to buy it just so I can show it off as fine art, but $280 is a little much for me to use it as a really nice paper weight.

For those of you that know your planes, here are the specs:

The contoured body is 7" long by 1-3/4" wide, and has a 12° bed angle. It is machined and surface ground to half our normal flatness and surface finish specifications; the sole and sides are flat and square to within +0.000" and -0.0015" over the entire surface. The A2 tool steel blade is 1-3/8" wide, 9/64" (0.140") thick and hardened to Rc60-62. The blade has a primary bevel of 23°, and a secondary bevel of 25°. The back of the blade is lapped flat within + or -0.0002" (two-tenths of a thousandth of an inch) in the working area of the blade.

Turn your Circular Saw into a Track Saw

There has been a lot of buzz about Track Saws with both DeWalt, and Makita finally coming out with versions for the USA. But I bet many people don't know that you can turn just about any circular saw into a track saw for a fraction of the cost of a complete track saw package all with a kit from EurekaZone. After all, why should you have to buy another circular saw if you already own one, especially if it's a saw you really like? Who needs Festool when you can make a track saw with your own circular saw?

Cool Flashlight Uses Ultracapacitors Not Batteries

light for life
This cool new flashlight from 5.11 Tactical uses futuristic technology to power its amazing light source. Instead of using the very common and boring battery, they use chose to go high tech, and use ultracapacitors. These ultracapacitors can be fully charged in about 90 seconds, giving you 90 minutes of run time. You might be thinking there is some kind of trade off because of the quick recharge, but you would be wrong. The flashlight has an amazing max output of 270 lumen's for 15 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of standby. The most amazing part is this flashlight has a life of 50,000 charge cycles, which gives the flash light the very fitting name of Light For Life.

You can pre-order your Light For Life today for only $170. The price is actually quite low compaired to other flashlighs in the same category that last half as long.

One Two Three Flashlights in One

stanley 3 in 1 led flashlightThe problem with most hand held flashlights is they take up valuable hand space. It might be just me, but I find it useful to use both of my hands while I am working on projects. This can sometimes be a hard thing to do in the dark while trying to prop up a flashlight.

If only there was a better way.

There is, and its called the Stanley 95-155 3-in-1 Tripod LED Flashlight. From a distance it looks like a normal flashlight, but up close you can see that it also has a built in tripod. Now you can light up your work area hands free. If that is not enough for you, it has a total of 3 lights built into one, with each head able to swivel 120 degrees. Press the release button, and your single flashlight with 3 heads, separates into 3 individual flashlights. Now you can work on 3 projects at once.

I tried to find a video of it in action, but youtube has let me down.

saw blade + sand paper = Final Cut

Final Cut , is one of those "why didn't I think of that?" products. It is so simple, yet something every finish carpenter or woodworker should have. It is basically a piece of sandpaper attached to the side of a saw blade. Amazing... I know.

You have two choices when deciding what you want. You can buy a 10" Final Cut blade with the sand paper already attached, or you can buy the Final Cut sandpaper for your own 8 1/2" - 12" saw blade. You could probably even use it on a smaller blade, but you would have to cut it to size.

Check out the video below for a great explanation of how to use the Final Cut. One thing that really caught my eye was the fact that you can make fine adjustments after the main cut, by just using the sand paper.

Cool tool, or waste of cash?

How about both? Introducing the Jointmaker Pro .

{youtube}DtGW3YffYCQ{/youtube}

It is no doubt a cool tool, and probably indispensable to the serious woodworker; but Bridge City Tool Works has to be crazy to charge almost $1300 for this.

I cant wait to see what people come up with for a DIY version of this. How about a  saw in a vise, mounted under a top, with some drawer glides.

Dura-GRIT - Tungsten Carbide cutting for your Dremel

Dura-GRIT is one of those "ahhh" tools. Why,  because when I first saw the video of them in action, I said "ahhh"  They are basically tungsten carbide versions of standard rotary cutting and sanding wheels. The video shows you everything, so be sure to take a look.

{youtube}aaBmUAaZppU{/youtube}

They are a little expensive at between $10-$15 each, but if they really do everything the video shows, they are probably worth it. If anyone has used these, be sure to leave a review; I am interested to see what they can do. Another interesting product they sell is a carbide sanding disk for your random orbital sander. Maybe with the release of the new oscillating tools from Dremel and Bosch, Dura-GRIT will make some attachments for them. There is always hope.

You can purchase Dura-GRIT products directly from their website.

Clamp your miter problems away.

clam clamp

I stumbled across a link that lead me to Clam Clamps . It is a sweet little clamp that will clamp... well... miters. I have never seen anything like it before, but I am sure it would come in handy. The price is a little high at $75, but if it really does what they say it can do, then maybe it is worth the price. You also have to look beyond trim work. This bad boy looks like it can clamp any wood that has a 45deg miter. For me, this would really come in handy for joining columns together.

They also have a video showing just how much clamping pressure you can get out of the clamp, so be sure to check it out.
